What to Expect From the Autism Evaluation Process
Autism evaluations are available in person at my Houston office or virtually via secure telehealth, depending on your family’s needs, your child’s age and/or developmental profile.
The evaluation is typically completed in one appointment.
For child assessments, this includes:
A detailed parent interview focused on developmental history, strengths, and current concerns
A semi-structured and/or play-based assessment using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) for in-person evaluations
For virtual evaluations, I use developmentally appropriate, evidence-based observational and interview-based tools designed for telehealth
Appointments typically last 2–3 hours and are designed to provide a nuanced, accurate understanding of your child’s unique developmental profile—whether conducted in person or virtually.
Before the Appointment
Prior to the evaluation, you will receive rating forms and questionnaires to complete. You are also encouraged to submit short videos of your child in natural settings, which are especially helpful for virtual autism evaluations and provide valuable insight into everyday communication and behavior.
Feedback & Written Report
Following the evaluation, we will schedule a 45-minute feedback session, held in person or virtually. During this session, I will:
Review diagnostic findings
Explain results in clear, accessible language
Share individualized recommendations
Answer questions and discuss next steps
Families can expect a comprehensive written report within two weeks of the feedback session.
Investment
Child Autism Evaluation (In-Person): $1,800*
Child Autism Evaluation (Virtual): $1,500
*If additional testing is recommended—such as developmental, cognitive, or academic assessment—there is an additional fee of $900, which requires a second testing appointment.

One of the benefits of choosing a private autism evaluation in Houston is shorter wait times compared with many hospital systems and specialty clinics. Toddlers can receive an autism evaluation from licensed psychologists with expertise in early childhood autism assessment, developmental pediatricians, pediatric neurologists, or multidisciplinary diagnostic teams specializing in early childhood development.
At Fein Psychology Services, I provide comprehensive autism evaluations for toddlers beginning at 18 months of age using evidence-based assessment methods tailored to each child's developmental level. As part of the evaluation process, I use the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), a gold-standard, standardized observational assessment tool used to assess behaviors associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
When evaluating a young child for autism, I look at the full developmental picture—not just whether a child meets criteria for autism. A comprehensive toddler autism evaluation considers many areas of development, including language and communication skills, social interaction, play skills, emotional development, motor skills, problem-solving abilities, learning skills, and patterns of behavior.
By considering the whole child, I help families better understand their child's unique strengths, challenges, and developmental profile while providing clear recommendations for next steps, supports, and interventions.
-
Parents often seek an autism evaluation when they notice differences in their child’s communication, social interaction, sensory processing, play, or emotional regulation that impact daily life. This may include challenges with back-and-forth conversation, understanding social cues, intense interests, sensory sensitivities, or difficulty with change and transitions.
An evaluation can be helpful if these patterns are:
Present across settings (home, school, community)
Ongoing over time
Affecting learning, relationships, or well-being
An autism evaluation helps clarify whether your child’s experiences are related to autism or another neurodevelopmental difference and provides guidance on how best to support them.

What happens during an autism evaluation?
A comprehensive autism evaluation is designed to understand a child’s social communication, behavior, development, learning profile, and individual strengths and challenges. The evaluation process typically includes a combination of:
Parent interview and developmental history to learn about early development, communication, social interactions, behaviors, sensory experiences, and areas of concern.
Standardized autism assessment tools to evaluate behaviors associated with autism, including social communication, play, flexibility, and repetitive behaviors. These may include tools such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), a standardized, play- and activity-based assessment that allows clinicians to observe social communication and behavioral patterns.
Behavioral observations of the child during structured activities and interactions.
Parent and teacher questionnaires or rating scales to gather information across settings, such as home and school.
Cognitive, developmental, language, or academic testing (when appropriate) to better understand a child’s overall profile and identify strengths, challenges, and support needs.
Following the evaluation, families receive feedback about the results, whether their child meets criteria for autism spectrum disorder, and individualized recommendations for supports, therapies, school accommodations, and next steps.
At Fein Psychology Services, Dr. Rachel Fein, PhD, BCBA provides comprehensive, neurodiversity-affirming autism evaluations that focus on understanding each child’s unique strengths and needs—not just identifying a diagnosis. Autism evaluations are available in-person in Houston and virtually throughout Texas and PSYPACT-participating states.
-
A neurodiversity-affirming autism evaluation looks at a child or young adult’s full profile, including strengths, challenges, communication style, sensory needs, and daily functioning. The goal is not just to determine whether someone meets criteria for autism, but to understand how they experience the world and what supports will help them thrive. Evaluations typically include caregiver interviews, standardized assessment tools, direct observation, and individualized recommendations.
-

-
I provide autism evaluations for toddlers (as young as 18 months), children, adolescents, and young adults. This includes early developmental evaluations as well as assessments for individuals who were not identified earlier and are seeking clarity later in life.
-
Most autism evaluations are completed over 2–3 appointments. This usually includes an intake session, testing/observation sessions, and a feedback session where results and recommendations are reviewed in detail.
-
Yes. I use research-based tools such as the ADOS-2, along with rating scales, developmental history, and clinical judgment. These tools are always used within a neurodiversity-affirming framework and interpreted in the context of the individual’s real-life functioning. For adults and high-masking individuals, I use other assessments, such as the MIGDAS-2.
-
Adults often seek an autism evaluation after noticing lifelong patterns of social differences, sensory sensitivities, feeling “out of sync” with others, or chronic burnout from masking or adapting. Many adults were missed in childhood, especially women, gender-diverse individuals, and high-masking individuals.
You might consider an evaluation if you experience:
Difficulty with social communication or unspoken rules
Sensory sensitivities (sound, light, textures, routines)
Intense or focused interests
Feeling exhausted by social interactions
A sense that past diagnoses (like anxiety or ADHD) don’t fully explain your experiences
An evaluation can provide understanding, language for your experiences, and access to appropriate supports and accommodations.
